AI Agents The launch of "AI Agents" demonstrated the real-world applications of Alphabet's generative AI advancements — a key box that investors want to see checked in the search for money-making opportunities . These applications are clearly the next phase of the generative AI revolution beyond the development of LLMs and deployment of general-purpose chatbots. So, too, will their customers that harness the power of the AI agents to better serve their own clients, increase employee productivity, and drive corporate efficiencies. Updates to Vertex AI Alphabet updated Vertex AI — its platform for building and deploying AI models — to include an agent-building feature. That essentially allows businesses to create customized AI agents on top of Gemini models.

ChatGPT, OpenAI's artificial-intelligence chatbot, has set relatively high expectations for customers who are now trying out Microsoft Copilot tools for the first time. Feedback for the tool has been mixed to leaning positive so far, according to the Microsoft employees who spoke with BI. But Microsoft employees told BI the comparisons with ChatGPT kept coming up. Read previewThe AI community assumes that OpenAI uses vast quantities of YouTube videos to train models, including its new Sora offering. The mystery is how OpenAI accesses enough YouTube content to make this work. Business Insider asked OpenAI whether it has downloaded YouTube videos at scale and whether the startup uses this content as data for AI model training. Google, OpenAI, and other tech companies are currently arguing that using copyrighted content for AI model training is also legal. And when pressed again about sources of training data, Murati replied, "I'm not going to go into the details."

Big Tech companies are testing AI tools internally in a massive 'dogfooding' experiment. This involves Big Tech companies taking large language models and generative AI tools and putting them to work inside their own organizations. The findings could also change how Big Tech companies operate — and how many expensive engineers they need. Big Tech companies want to sell AI tools to help businesses, developers, advertisers, creators, and other customers reach this new productivity nirvana. If these dogfooding tests go well, Big Tech companies may not need to hire as many workers in the future.

Microsoft seemed to pass Wall Street's latest test when it demonstrated its ability to monetize artificial intelligence. The action came a day after Microsoft issued light guidance but delivered a top-and-bottom line beat and strong AI-focused commentary. Wall Street analysts across the board regarded Microsoft's results as an affirmation of its AI leadership position. Piper Sandler's Brent Bracelin said in a Tuesday note that the results "reinforced Microsoft's first-mover advantage in AI applications." Meanwhile, Goldman Sachs analyst Kash Rangan called the company one of the "most compelling" opportunities across sectors, viewing AI as a major boon for an "already strong growth profile."

For decades, Big Tech companies have avoided responsibility for anything posted on their platforms. Generative AI is about to end this prized legal protection. Meta, Google, Microsoft, Amazon and even Apple have spent the last year rushing to roll out generative AI tools and models to compete with OpenAI. Generative AI models and tools, however, are developed, owned and operated by Big Tech companies. Otherwise, by creating generative AI tools and providing the outputs, Chander sees few ways a tech company will be able to refute its role in generative AI content.

REUTERS/Dado Ruvic/Illustration//File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsZURICH, Oct 31 (Reuters) - Siemens (SIEGn.DE) and Microsoft (MSFT.O) on Tuesday announced a joint project to use artificial intelligence to increase productivity and human-machine collaboration. The Siemens Industrial Copilot scheme will see the two companies work together to use generative AI for the manufacturing, transportation and healthcare industries. German automotive supplier Schaeffler AG (SHA_p.DE) is among the companies to have adopted the Siemens Industrial Copilot, Siemens said. The project will create AI copilots to assist staff at customer companies as they design new products, and organise production and maintenance. It intends to use the Siemens Industrial Copilot to reduce production downtimes at its plants.

Microsoft's chief financial officer Amy Hood said on a conference call with analysts that higher-than-expected AI consumption was responsible for a 3 percentage point boost to its cloud business. Alphabet has prioritized snaring AI startups as customers for its cloud division, while Microsoft has relied on its existing relationships to secure larger customers. Azure revenue rose 29%, higher than a 26.2% growth estimate from market research firm Visible Alpha. RBC Capital Markets has previously estimated that Microsoft will clock over $3 billion in revenue from generative AI offerings this fiscal year. Quite surprising to see strong growth reacceleration in the Azure Cloud segment, which is clearly driven by AI-as-a-service related demand," said Global X analyst Tejas Dessai.

Microsoft's cloud business, Azure, is crucial to its increased focus on AI. Analysts estimate Azure revenue growth in the fiscal first quarter expanded 27% year-over-year in constant currency terms, according to FactSet. Analysts at Piper Sandler said the Nov. 1 general release of Microsoft's 365 Copilot , an AI assistant to productivity applications like Word, should be a catalyst for shares. Bottom line The full payoff of Microsoft's AI efforts won't be fully reflected in the upcoming quarterly results given generative AI is still in its infancy. Just like the cloud transformed every software category, we think AI is one such transformational shift. Therefore, this notion of Copilots that we're introducing is really going to be revolutionary in terms of driving productivity and communication. Milton Friedman once famously said: "the business of business is business." One is, is the business of business just business? So, I think AI can actually be very helpful in many ways to be a little more empathetic and more understanding of the world.

Microsoft said Thursday that starting Nov. 1, large companies will be able to buy Microsoft 365 Copilot, its artificial intelligence supplement to core productivity apps such as Word and Excel. Microsoft 365 Copilot is one result of the company's close collaboration with San Francisco startup OpenAI, which became a household name after ChatGPT, OpenAI's chatbot, went viral last year. In March, Microsoft first revealed plans for Microsoft 365 Copilot. Microsoft 365 Copilot tools are now in preview with small businesses, Colette Stallbaumer, a general manager, said at Thursday's event. Turning Microsoft 365 Copilot into a big business might take time.
